Benalmádena: Columbus, a Buddhist Stupa and a Family Paradise

Benalmádena, divided into three areas (Pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel and Costa), is unique thanks to its remarkable architectural and religious eclecticism. Here, a medieval castle, a Buddhist stupa and the most developed family entertainment infrastructure on the Costa del Sol coexist peacefully.

Colomares Castle: A Tribute to Columbus

Perched on the hills of Pueblo is one of the region's most remarkable monuments — Colomares Castle (Castillo de Colomares). This is not a medieval fortress, but a monument built between 1987 and 1994 by Dr Esteban Martín in honour of Christopher Columbus's voyages and the discovery of America. Using only bricks, stone and cement, with two assistants and no heavy machinery, the doctor created 1,500 square metres of architectural fantasy, synthesising Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Mudéjar styles.

Guinness World Record: Inside Colomares Castle is the world's smallest functioning chapel, measuring just 1.96 square metres — an official Guinness World Record. The architecture incorporates images of Columbus's three ships: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María. Admission: €3 (adults), €2 (children and pensioners).

Enlightenment Stupa: The Capital of Western Buddhism

Another architectural landmark is the Enlightenment Stupa — the largest Buddhist stupa in Western Europe, standing 33 metres tall. Erected in 2003 as the final project of the Tibetan master Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, it differs from traditional stupas in that it contains a 100-square-metre meditation hall featuring Nepalese frescoes depicting the life of the Buddha. Thanks to this structure, Benalmádena holds the unofficial status of the 'capital of Western Buddhism'.

Benalmádena: Family-Friendly Facilities and Investment Analysis

In terms of family-friendly facilities, Benalmádena offers the highest concentration of attractions on the coast: Parque de la Paloma (with animals roaming freely), the Sea Life aquarium in Puerto Marina, the Teleférico cable car to the summit of Calamorro, and Europe's largest butterfly park. These attractions generate consistent tourist traffic and strong rental demand.

In 2025–2026, a strategic infrastructure project was launched: the replacement of the 40-year-old water pipeline between Benalmádena and Torremolinos (budget: €13+ million). In parallel, a reclaimed water network is being built for garden irrigation, which will reduce property maintenance costs for owners.
